Abby Gross

A Pennsylvania native, Abby Gross is currently a music educator and freelance saxophonist in the Pittsburgh area who also plays an integral part as sax player in the soul-rock band, The Commonheart. She moved to Pittsburgh from Somerset to attend Duquesne Univeristy where in 2010 she received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Music Education and in 2012 received her Master's in Music performance with an emphasis on saxophone. Through her schooling, she has studied under tenor saxophonist James Houlik, saxophonist and arranger Mike Tomaro, jazz trumpet master Sean Jones, flautist Jennifer Connor, and tenor saxophonist of the New Century Saxophone Quartet, Steve Pollock. In addition to her studies, Abby served as the Graduate Assistant to the Woodwind Department, as well as a teaching assistant to the Musicianship Department where she aided in teaching by serving as a guest lecturer throughout the music history course.

Abby is an active and avid music educator, having taught Kindergarten through adulthood in schools and colleges all over Pittsburgh and its surrounding regions. But Abby is a performer at heart playing around Pittsburgh with a variety of groups of all different styles such as Reggae, Latin Dance, Jazz, Opera, Funk, and Brazilian Choro. Her performance appointments during her time at Duquesne University included soprano saxophone chair of the Vega Saxophone Quartet and lead alto saxophone in the Duquesne University Jazz Ensemble. Her primary performance position is as saxophonist of Pittsburgh's soul-rock band The Commonheart.
